Our company culture has to be experienced first hand in order to fully understand what we have to offer, but we can give you a little sneak peek into life at LightSpeed. We put together some interesting facts to illustrate some of the key points that makes us who we are.
Every so-often we have a meeting where we look back on events. In this meeting we say what went well, what did not go so well and then we discuss how we can improve things. The picture on the right show the boards that we have in the office where we implement this system.
The company relations have no hierarchical limitations. The monthly retro meeting is an open place for discussion and ideally a platform for team members to have their say with everyone present and in such a way they can make a difference in the company.
“A kanban board is one of the tools which can be used to implement the Kanban method (a system to control the logistical chain from a production point of view for a project. The board utilizes magnets, plastic chips, colored washers or sticky notes to represent work items.” Have a look at our picture on the right to see what our office kanban board looks like. The management team have daily meetings around this board where they discuss our work.
Kanban boards use a visual element called a swim lane. “A swim lane is a visual element used in process flow diagrams, or flowcharts, that visually distinguishes responsibilities for sub-processes of a business process. Swim lanes may be arranged either horizontally or vertically.” On the image of our office kanban board on the right, the swimlanes are are named “backlog”, “to do”, “doing”, “waiting for”, “testing”, “live deploy”, “client comms”, “leads” and “costings”. They are all arranged vertically.
For as long as LightSpeed has been around there have been cats holding court in our office. They are so much a part of the furniture now that we even ask potential new employees in interviews if they’re allergic to cats!
Our kitty team members bring lots of light relief and fun to our busy and focussed work space – they certainly qualify as LightSpeed VIPs!
Dedicated study time
At LightSpeed we have a culture of learning and we strive for continuous improvement. Each team member gets between 1-2 hours a day to work on their skills.
Every now and then we organise a team lunch or a team event that we attend in work hours. This is to do some team building and to make new members feel welcome.
Our favourite technologies
At LightSpeed we use cost-efficient online applications like Trello, Asana, Harvest, Google Apps, Zendesk, Dropbox, HipChat for communication, planning and workflow management. These tools allow us to self-organise, manage time more efficiently and deal with remote team members. We also love working on Mac, our favourite browser is chrome and our favourite mobile devices are Android.
Miscellaneous facts about us:
- We all have other interests and when we are not working, we do all kinds of things from bicycling to band practice and from trail running to cooking.
- Our office is located near many natural wonders including Table Mountain. Some of our team members use their lunchtime to go hiking in some of the nearby nature reserves.
- We don’t have a dress code. LightSpeed is after their employee’s knowledge and not their fancy clothes.
- Every Friday at 4pm it is “Beer O’clock”. We celebrate the hard work that we did throughout the week and we start preparing for the weekend.
