LightSpeed conducted their first Gutenberg Editor training session with the staff from Men’s Health SA at Media24. The training was focused on creating articles on the website using the newly developed long format.
LightSpeed worked on developing a long format template recently for articles on the Men’s Health SA magazine website, this has resulted in a richer experience for the reader of their online content.
We used long format articles from menshealth.com to provide the inspiration and format for the template on mh.co.za. The following specification was agreed on:
- Additional header banner area title layout options
- Video banners
- Image slider banners
- Headings and fonts
- Browser, desktop and mobile device testing
Here are some sample posts from menshealth.com:

Since this was our first development involving Gutenberg there was an extensive testing process, after upgrading WordPress core, and fixing any bugs that might have resulted. Fortunately most compatibility issues were styling fixes only.
This project originally started using Site Origin page builder because of our vast experience in that area. However the release of WordPress 5.0 was creeping up on us throughout, and when coupled with unforeseen project delays, it started to make more sense to launch the long format template using the Gutenberg editor.
At this time general understanding of Gutenberg was limited, and we were constantly having to evolve our understanding, especially since the Gutenberg editor plugin (note: prior to WordPress 5.0 release, Gutenberg Editor was available as a stand alone plugin) was being updated frequently with new features. Once it was incorporated into WP Core it became more stable and changes less frequent.
Click on the screenshot below show the resulting long format article. We will update this post with links to actual articles once they have been loaded to the live site.
Our resident training guru Iggi, was dispatched to Media24 headquarters to train the Men’s Health team on creating, editing and publishing articles using this new long format and the Gutenberg editor. Each team member was assigned a sample post to copy on our testing environment.
